The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
