Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
