European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
