The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
